If you are anything like me, you’d easily identify with the words of this song.

If you’ve ever had things your family did that never went well; voices in your head telling you how you’re never going to make it; brokenness and broken heart; lost dreams; mistakes that cause you both pain and shame, etc, you will know how profound it is to now gain a liberating understanding that none of that matters, because you are light.

I love that the song is simple. It lets the listener focus on what’s important: the lyrics.

The first time I heard it, I couldn’t believe the words hitting my ears. Ever had that feeling when a singer gives voice to things resounding in your heart? You just feel like you wrote that song; or they wrote it just for you. It couldn’t be any truer. That’s what I get from India.Arie’s I Am Light.

It inspires me to want to jump up, despite memories of the past trying to intimidate me, and scream: I AM NOT MY PAST; I’M EVEN BETTER THAN MY PRESENT. I AM THE EXPRESSION OF DIVINITY. I AM THE GOD FOR THE WORLD TO SEE. I AM GREATER THAN MY GREATEST FAILURES; EVEN GREATER THAN THE SUM OF THE PIECES OF ALL I’VE BEEN ABOUT. I AM LIGHT!
